Welcome!

My name is Emily Meyer, and I am an educational advocate as well as a speech language pathologist. During my career as a speech pathologist, I found a passion with helping parents and caregivers navigate the special education process.

Through legal courses and workshops, I have learned of the legal and ethical obligations of school districts. I have created resources and courses for parents, caregivers, and providers alike.

Everyone deserves a voice.

What is an educational advocate?

An educational advocate plays a crucial role in helping families navigate the complex landscape of special education. By providing expert knowledge and guidance, an advocate ensures that the child's educational needs are met in accordance with legal and educational standards. They assist in understanding and interpreting special education laws and regulations, helping parents and guardians to advocate effectively for their child’s rights. This includes interpreting the requirements of the Individualized Education Program (IEP), ensuring that the services outlined in the IEP are implemented correctly, and identifying any discrepancies between what is promised and what is delivered. An advocate can also facilitate communication between the family and school personnel, ensuring that all parties are aligned in their goals and strategies for the child’s education.

Additionally, an educational advocate can assist in preparing for and participating in IEP meetings, where they help parents articulate their concerns, set realistic goals, and negotiate necessary changes to the IEP. They can provide support during disputes, such as addressing disagreements over educational services or accommodations, and can guide families through formal processes such as mediation or due process hearings if necessary. By offering personalized support and advocating on behalf of the child and their family, an educational advocate ensures that the child's educational needs are comprehensively addressed and that they receive the appropriate support to thrive academically and socially.
